About us

Hartwell Simulation was founded by Michael Sheedy and Daniel Hartwell who both share a common vision of providing a low cost medical simulator which helps medical professionals save lives.

Nothing can better prepare a clinician to treat a patient like the experience of having done it before. Until now, medical simulators have tended to be expensive and in unfamiliar environments away from hospitals. Hartwell Simulation has changed the game.

Hartwell’s groundbreaking technology allows for high fidelity in-situ medical simulation. The portable plug-and-play system converts any theatre into the most realistic training environment for any clinician: their own. A wireless tablet controls physiological outputs which are displayed on the same vital signs monitors that the clinician uses every day. From these readings, the clinician can take the same appropriate responses which may prove life-saving with a real patient in exactly the same environment. The realism is unparalleled and so is the learning experience.

Ultimately, a better prepared clinician is a more effective clinician and that leads to the most important outcome of all: higher patient survival rates and post-treatment health. That’s the driving force at the heart of what Hartwell does.

Surgeons, doctors, and nurses need to undergo more training than ever before. But training for crisis situations in a way which feels immersive and as real as the real thing is hugely expensive. Anaesthetists and other clinicians working in ICU and ED generally need to leave the hospital for days or weeks to undergo regular training and this comes at a massive cost to hospitals. What’s more, the equipment used in offsite simulations isn’t what the clinician is familiar with, meaning the training isn’t as effective as it should be.

Hartwell Simulation has changed the game. The world-leading device connects directly to a hospital’s system, which means simulation events can be run directly through the clinician’s usual setup. Sounds, environments, and vital signs monitors which the clinician uses every day tell her what the situation with the virtual patient is. This means she can react in the same environment which she would be in for the real event — this situational learning is incredibly powerful. Physiological signals are controlled by a fellow clinician through a wireless tablet to respond to the actions of the operating clinician.
